Borje Kholeno

Published by arash at 1:26 under Mountains

Yesterday we (Bahram and his friend Zahra) set out for the Kholeno peak (خلنو); in central Alborz. With 4375 meters Kholeno is the second highest peak after Damavand in the central part of Alborz. There are actually three Kholeno peaks: Borje Kholeno (برج خلنو), Small Kholeno (خلنو‌ی کوچک) and Big Kholeno (خلنو‌ی بزرگ).
‌What we didn’t know, was that it would be a full winter ascend. We expected some snow but nothing like what we encountered. At one point we could measure up to 147 cm of snow. But we were equiped well enough to make it a safe ascend.

It was a beautiful day and the landscape was more like a dream landscape than anything else. We had a panoramic view, ranging from Damavand in the east to the three Sarak Chals (سرک‌چال) in the west. We left Tehran at 5:35 in the morning and set out for the ascend at 6:38. After a ten minute breakfast at Talkhab (تلخ‌آب), we continued and reached Borj (4232 m) at 13:14 with tempretures as low as -8 C. We were back at our car at 16:39. The only problem was that Zahra got cold and wouldn’t continue to the other peaks, hence we returned after having ascended Borj. This was the first training ascend to get ready for the winter ascend of Damavand. I am really excited for it.
